What to Wear for Family Pictures

ou've booked your family photography session—now comes one of the biggest questions:

What should everyone wear for family pictures?

If you're anything like me, choosing one outfit can be hard enough. Coordinating clothing for your entire family can feel even more overwhelming!

As a Navarre Beach family photographer, one of the questions I'm asked most often is what families should wear for their photography session. Whether we're planning beautiful family beach pictures in Navarre Beach, an outdoor portrait session, or photographs at another Northwest Florida location, your clothing can help bring the entire session together.

The good news is that your family doesn't need to perfectly match.

In fact, I usually recommend coordinating instead of matching.

The most important thing is choosing clothing that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.

What To Wear for Non Beach Family Photos?

Dress in an outfit that is comfortable and flatters you.

Fitted clothes – they always look better than loose-fitting clothing.

Closed-toed shoes.

Jeans, when worn with nice shirts.

Maxi dresses.

Long sleeves – they generally look better than short sleeves.

Layers – these can create various looks when taking multiple photos.

Different textures.

What to Wear for Non-Beach Family Photos

For family portraits away from the beach, think about your location, the season, and the style you want for your finished photographs.

Start with one outfit you love and build everyone else's clothing around it.

Some things that photograph beautifully include:

  • Maxi and midi dresses

  • Well-fitting jeans paired with a nice top

  • Layers such as jackets, cardigans, or sweaters

  • Textured fabrics

  • Coordinating neutrals and richer colors

  • Simple accessories

  • Clothing with movement and personality

You don't need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for professional family pictures.

Choose clothing that fits well and makes you feel good.

If you're uncomfortable in an outfit at home, chances are you won't suddenly love wearing it in front of the camera.

Comfort creates confidence, and confidence photographs beautifully.

Avoid large logos and characters.

Steer clear of solid bright neon red, bright neon orange and bright neon pink colors.

Wear your hair how you like it, but typically stay away from ponytails. ( Use lots of hair spray for outdoor location)

What to Wear for Navarre Beach Family Photos

Planning Navarre Beach family pictures is a little different because we want your clothing to work with the beautiful natural colors surrounding you.

Navarre Beach gives us white sand, blue-green Gulf water, sea oats, soft coastal colors, and sometimes gorgeous colorful sunsets.

You can choose clothing that complements those colors—or use your outfits to add beautiful contrast.

And because my photography style at Inspired By You Photography is bold and colorful, you certainly don't have to be afraid of color!

What Colors Look Best for Beach Family Pictures?

There isn't one perfect color palette for family beach photography.

Some combinations to consider are:

Soft & Coastal:
Cream, ivory, beige, soft blue, sage, dusty blue and muted pastels.

Bold & Colorful:
Deep blues, turquoise, teal, rich green, burgundy, jewel tones and other saturated colors.

Warm & Natural:
Tan, cream, rust, muted coral, earthy greens and warm neutrals.

Classic & Simple:
White, cream, khaki and shades of blue.

You can even start with one patterned dress or shirt you love and pull several colors from that pattern for everyone else's clothing.

Should Everyone Wear White for Beach Family Photos?

You can—but you certainly don't have to.

All-white family beach outfits can create a classic look, but they're only one option.

Because Navarre Beach has such light sand, adding blues, greens, jewel tones, pastels, textures, or other complementary colors can help create more depth and visual interest in your photographs.

The goal isn't for everyone to look identical.

Your family should look like you belong together without looking like you're wearing uniforms.

Should Family Outfits Match?

Instead of matching, I recommend coordinating.

Choose a palette of approximately two or three main colors and then allow each person to wear different shades, textures, or subtle patterns within that palette.

For example, one person might wear a patterned dress containing blue, cream and green. Someone else could wear a blue shirt, another cream, and another a complementary shade of green.

When you put everyone together, the outfits feel connected without everyone wearing the exact same thing.

What Should Large or Extended Families Wear?

This is especially important for my large and extended-family photography sessions in Navarre Beach.

If you're coordinating ten, fifteen, or even more people, don't try to make everyone wear the exact same outfit.

Instead, choose a shared color palette and send it to each household.

Each individual family can choose clothing within those colors.

This helps the entire extended family look cohesive in the large group photograph while still allowing the smaller individual families, couples, grandparents, siblings, and children to look great when photographed separately.

If your extended family is vacationing together, start planning outfits before arriving in Navarre Beach. That will save everyone a lot of stress on photography day.

Can We Wear Patterns for Family Pictures?

Absolutely—just use them thoughtfully.

One or two patterned pieces can help pull everyone's colors together.

The problem happens when too many people wear competing patterns.

Try mixing solids, textures, and a few carefully chosen prints instead.

I'd generally avoid extremely busy patterns, very tiny repetitive prints, oversized logos, large words, and prominent characters because they can pull attention away from your family's faces.

What Should Children Wear for Family Photos?

Let your children's personalities show.

Dresses that move, textured fabrics, linen shirts, rolled sleeves, cute accessories, and comfortable outfits can all photograph beautifully.

But remember:

Kids need to be able to move.

During my family sessions, we may walk, cuddle, play, laugh, sit, hug, or explore.

A child who is miserable because an outfit is itchy, tight, or uncomfortable isn't going to suddenly forget about it because there's a camera nearby.

Choose something that looks great but still allows them to be kids.

What Shoes Should We Wear for Beach Pictures?

For Navarre Beach family photography, my favorite beach shoes are often no shoes at all!

Bare feet look natural in the sand and allow your family to walk near the water without worrying about shoes.

For non-beach family portraits, choose shoes that coordinate with the overall style of your clothing and the location.

Don't forget to look at everyone's shoes when planning outfits. Something as simple as one pair of bright athletic shoes can draw your eye immediately in an otherwise coordinated family portrait.

What About Hair for Beach Pictures?

Wear your hair in a way that makes you feel like yourself.

But remember that we're photographing beside the Gulf of Mexico.

Wind happens!

If you have long hair, bring a brush or comb and a few hair ties, clips, or pins just in case.

A little movement in the hair can actually look beautiful in beach photographs, so don't worry about keeping every single strand perfectly in place.

What Should We Avoid Wearing for Family Photos?

Try to avoid clothing that will become the center of attention instead of your family.

That can include extremely bright neon colors, oversized logos, large words or graphics, character shirts, and too many competing patterns.

Also think about undergarments when choosing light-colored or flowing clothing, particularly when we're photographing in bright beach light.

And most importantly, don't choose something simply because Pinterest says it's what you're “supposed” to wear.

If it doesn't feel like you, choose something else.

Dress for the Weather and Location

Florida weather deserves its own consideration.

For summer Navarre Beach family photos, lightweight and breathable fabrics can help everyone stay comfortable.

Flowing dresses and skirts can create beautiful movement in a Gulf breeze.

During cooler months, layers can add texture while keeping everyone comfortable.

We'll also be walking through sand during beach sessions, so choose clothing that allows you to move easily.

Lay Everything Out Before Your Family Session

Here's one of the easiest ways to see whether your family's clothing works together:

Lay every outfit next to each other and take a picture with your phone.

Look at the picture.

Does one outfit immediately grab your attention?

Is one color completely different from everything else?

Are there too many patterns?

Does everything look exactly the same?

Seeing all the clothing together can make potential problems much easier to notice.

And don't wait until photography day to have everyone try everything on!

Still Not Sure What to Wear?

Don't stress about creating a “perfect” family wardrobe.

Your clothes are only one part of your photographs.

The most important part is you and the people you love.

At Inspired By You Photography, I want your photographs to capture your family's personalities, relationships, laughter, and genuine connections.

If you've booked a session with me and you're unsure about your outfits, send me pictures of what you're considering. I'm happy to help you think through your choices before your session.

And if you're still looking for a Navarre Beach family photographer, I offer photography for single families, large and extended families, vacationing families, children, maternity, seniors, and special occasions throughout Navarre, Navarre Beach, Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and the surrounding Florida Gulf Coast.

Your family doesn't have to look perfect.

They just need to look like your family.
