Don't Edit the Best Version of Yourself Out of Your Pictures
We are often our own worst critics. With filters, editing apps, and social media at our fingertips, it has become incredibly easy to look at a photograph of ourselves and immediately start thinking about everything we would like to change.
But here's something I want you to remember: your photographs don't need to show a perfect version of you. They should show the real you.
Your God-given beauty doesn't need to fit someone else's definition of perfection.
As a Navarre Beach photographer, my job isn't simply to take a pretty picture. It's to document you and the people you love during a particular season of your life. Photographs tell your story, and years from now, the people who love you aren't going to be studying the little things you were self-conscious about.
They're going to see you.
What if I don't like how I look in pictures?
This is something photographers hear all the time.
Many people walk into a photography session already worried about how they're going to look. You may be thinking about your weight, your smile, your arms, your hair, or wondering whether you know how to pose for pictures.
My advice is:
“Look at yourself through your loved one's eyes, and you will no longer see the flaws.”
Your children aren't looking at a family photograph and thinking about the things you wanted Photoshopped. They see their mom. Your spouse sees the person they love. Your family sees the expressions, relationships, and memories you created together.
That's what I want to photograph.
Can a professional photographer help me look better in pictures?
Absolutely, and it doesn't have to mean dramatically changing your appearance afterward.
One of the benefits of hiring an experienced professional photographer is having someone who understands flattering lighting, angles, posing, composition, and how to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.
During my Navarre Beach family photography sessions, I don't expect families to arrive knowing exactly where to stand, what to do with their hands, or how to pose.
That's part of my job.
I'll provide direction when you need it while also giving your family opportunities to interact naturally. Some of my favorite photographs happen between the posed pictures—the laughter, hugs, movement, and little expressions that show genuine connection.
Natural Editing Without Changing Who You Are
Professional editing is still an important part of creating a finished photograph.
I edit my photographs to create the bold, colorful style that is part of Inspired By You Photography. Professional editing can also address lighting, color, cropping, and other elements that help create a beautiful finished image.
But there's a difference between professionally editing a photograph and changing someone until they no longer look like themselves.
My goal is for you to recognize yourself in your photographs.
I want you to look beautiful because you are beautifully you, not because editing transformed you into someone else.
How Can I Feel More Comfortable During Family Pictures?
If you feel awkward or nervous in front of a camera, you aren't alone.
Choosing a photographer whose personality and style make you comfortable can make a huge difference. Talk with your photographer before your session, ask questions, and don't be afraid to mention something you're particularly nervous about.
Clothing can make a difference too. Choose something that fits comfortably and makes you feel confident rather than buying an outfit simply because you think it will photograph well.
And when your session begins, don't worry about being perfect.
During a family beach photography session in Navarre Beach, your kids may run through the sand. The wind may move your hair. Someone may laugh at the wrong moment. Little ones might not look at the camera every single time.
That's okay.
Sometimes those imperfect moments create the most meaningful photographs.
Your Family Wants You in the Pictures
This may be the most important thing I can tell you.
Get in the picture.
Parents—especially moms—can spend years documenting everyone else while rarely appearing in their family's photographs.
Don't wait until you've lost weight. Don't wait until your hair is perfect. Don't wait until you feel more photogenic.
Your children are growing right now.
Someday, the photographs you're hesitant to take today may become some of the photographs they treasure most.
