Navarre Beach Family Photo Tips: How to Take Beautiful Beach Pictures
How to Take Beautiful Beach Pictures in Navarre Beach, Florida
If you're visiting Navarre Beach, Florida, chances are you're going to take plenty of pictures while you're here. With beautiful white sand, Gulf waters, and colorful sunsets, Navarre Beach creates a gorgeous backdrop for family photographs.
But beach photography can be trickier than it looks.
Bright sunlight, wind, reflections from the sand and water, young children, and changing Florida weather can all affect your pictures.
As a Navarre Beach family photographer, I've learned a few things about creating beautiful beach portraits while still allowing families to relax and enjoy the experience.
Whether you're taking your own vacation pictures or planning to hire a professional photographer, here are some of my favorite tips for beautiful Navarre Beach family photos.
1. Schedule Family Pictures Early in Your Vacation
If you're visiting Navarre Beach on vacation and planning professional family pictures, don't wait until your last night.
I recommend scheduling your session toward the beginning of your vacation whenever possible.
One reason is sunburn.
After several days enjoying the Florida sun, someone in the family may end up a little red! Scheduling pictures early can help avoid that.
It can also give you some flexibility if weather interferes with your original session date.
If you're traveling with an extended family, schedule your Navarre Beach photography session before your vacation begins rather than waiting until everyone arrives.
2. What Is the Best Time for Pictures at Navarre Beach?
One of the most common questions families ask is:
“What is the best time for beach family photos?”
For professional beach portraits, the beautiful light around sunrise and sunset can be ideal.
The softer light can be more flattering for portraits than harsh midday sunlight. Evening sessions can also give us an opportunity to capture the beautiful colors that sometimes appear over the Gulf Coast around sunset.
The exact session time can change throughout the year because sunset times change seasonally.
That's one reason working with a photographer experienced in Navarre Beach photography can be helpful. Your photographer can recommend a session time based on the time of year, location, and lighting conditions.
3. Avoid Harsh Midday Sun When Possible
The middle of the day may be wonderful for swimming, but it isn't always ideal for portraits.
Bright overhead sunlight can create strong shadows around the eyes and face. White sand and water also reflect a tremendous amount of light.
If you have flexibility, consider taking your important family photographs earlier or later in the day.
And if midday is your only option, look for open shade or position your family carefully rather than having everyone stare directly toward bright sunlight.
4. What Should You Wear for Navarre Beach Family Pictures?
Your clothing can have a big impact on the overall appearance of your photographs.
You don't necessarily need everyone wearing identical outfits. Instead, choose clothing that coordinates.
Soft neutrals, blues, greens, earth tones, pastels, and other colors inspired by the coast can work beautifully, but your family's clothing should ultimately reflect your personality and the style you want for your photographs.
Flowing dresses and skirts can create beautiful movement on a breezy beach.
Most importantly, choose clothing that fits well and makes everyone comfortable.
Avoid waiting until the day of your session to try everything on!
5. Expect Wind During Your Beach Photography Session
It's the beach. There's probably going to be some wind.
Rather than expecting every strand of hair to remain perfectly in place, embrace some movement.
If you have longer hair, consider bringing a brush or comb for quick touch-ups. You may also want to bring hair ties or clips just in case they're needed.
Flowing clothing can look particularly beautiful when there's a gentle Gulf breeze.
Wind is simply part of Florida beach photography, and sometimes it actually adds movement and personality to your pictures.
6. How Do You Take Good Beach Pictures With Kids?
Don't expect young children to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera for an entire session.
Let them be kids.
Allow them to walk through the sand, play, laugh, cuddle with Mom and Dad, hold hands, or interact with their siblings.
Those activities give your photographer opportunities to capture genuine expressions rather than forcing smiles.
For very young children who aren't sure about the sand, bringing a familiar blanket can help.
And don't schedule a photography session when you already know your little one is likely to be exhausted or hungry.
Bring water and anything your child may reasonably need during the session.
7. Don't Expect Every Picture to Be Posed
Some of my favorite family photographs aren't the ones where everyone is looking directly at the camera.
I love photographing genuine connections.
Walk together.
Hold hands.
Hug your children.
Let Dad toss a little one into the air.
Let the kids laugh together.
Snuggle up with your spouse.
A professional family beach photographer can give your family direction while still creating opportunities for natural interaction.
The goal isn't simply to document what everyone looked like.
It's to photograph what your family felt like together during this season of life.
8. Taking Extended Family Pictures at Navarre Beach
Navarre Beach is a wonderful place for family vacations, and sometimes those vacations bring several generations together.
That creates a great opportunity for extended family beach photography.
If grandparents, adult children, grandchildren, siblings, and cousins are all together, don't take only one photograph of the entire group.
Capture different combinations too.
During an extended-family session, I like creating photographs of the entire family as well as individual households, grandparents with grandchildren, couples, siblings, children, and other meaningful combinations.
These photographs can become especially valuable because large families don't always have opportunities to be together in one place.
9. What Happens if It Rains on the Day of Your Beach Pictures?
Florida weather can change quickly, especially during certain times of the year.
Don't panic just because you see rain in the forecast.
Weather conditions can change, and an overcast sky doesn't necessarily mean bad photographs. Clouds can sometimes create beautiful, soft light.
If weather genuinely makes a session unsafe or impractical, your photographer can discuss the available options with you.
This is another reason I recommend scheduling vacation photography earlier in your trip when possible—it may give you additional flexibility.
10. Use the Beach Environment to Tell the Story
Don't forget where you are!
Include the sand, water, shoreline, dunes, sky, and other natural surroundings in your photographs.
Take some close portraits, but also step back and create photographs that show your family within the landscape.
Years from now, those wider photographs can immediately transport you back to your Navarre Beach vacation.
11. Don't Forget the Details
Not every photograph needs to be a traditional family portrait.
Photograph little feet in the sand.
Capture children holding seashells.
Photograph footprints, hands, hugs, wet toes, windblown hair, and the way your children interact with each other.
Those little details help tell the complete story.
12. Should You Hire a Professional Beach Photographer?
You can absolutely take wonderful vacation pictures yourself.
But there is one major problem:
Someone is usually missing from the picture.
Hiring a professional photographer allows everyone to be included.
A professional photographer also understands lighting, posing, camera settings, composition, editing, and how to work with the challenges that come with photographing people on a beach.
For large and extended families, having someone else organize the group can be particularly valuable.
Instead of worrying about the camera, you get to concentrate on being with your family.
