Celebrating National Popcorn Day: Capturing the Little Moments

If your family is anything like mine, popcorn holds a special place in your hearts. It's one of those simple treats that can turn an ordinary family night into a memory. As a Navarre, Florida family photographer, I'm always encouraging families to enjoy and capture those everyday moments together—not just the big milestones.

Whether it's a family movie night at home, a trip to a local event, or a fun afternoon with the kids, sometimes the smallest moments become our favorite memories.

While celebrating National Popcorn Day, here are a few popcorn facts that might add some extra pop to your appreciation for this beloved treat!

Ever wondered why the corn on your dinner table doesn't magically turn into popcorn? That's because the corn we eat and the corn we pop are two different varieties of maize. The popcorn-making variety is known as Zea mays everta, characterized by its small ears and kernels that burst open when exposed to dry heat.

Here's another fascinating fact: In 1948, Herbert Dick and Earle Smith discovered ancient ears of popcorn in Bat Cave in west-central New Mexico. Popcorn has a long history throughout the Americas, with evidence of popcorn and varieties of maize discovered in places including Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, and other areas of Central and South America.

The rise of popcorn in the United States dates back to the 1800s. Charles Cretors, a candy-store owner, later introduced a steam-powered popcorn-popping machine that helped make this tasty treat even more popular. By the early 1900s, popcorn vendors had become a familiar sight.

Around the same era, popcorn also became part of another famous American treat—Cracker Jack. The combination of popcorn, peanuts, and a sweet coating became incredibly popular.

Popcorn also developed a lasting connection with baseball. In 1908, Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote the famous song Take Me Out to the Ball Game, with its memorable reference to Cracker Jack. Generations later, popcorn and other ballpark snacks remain part of the experience of attending sporting events with family and friends.

From movie nights to sporting events and family celebrations, popcorn has found its way into so many of the simple moments families enjoy together.
