Did you know that January 13 is celebrated as National Rubber Ducky Day?

According to a 1973 Sesame Street calendar, January 13 is Rubber Duckie's birthday! Whether you remember the famous yellow duck from childhood or have little ones who love rubber ducks today, this simple toy has become a fun and nostalgic part of childhood for generations.

As a children's and family photographer in Navarre, Florida, I love the little things that bring out a child's personality and imagination. Sometimes something as simple as a favorite toy can become part of the memories we want to hold onto.

A Little Rubber Ducky History

The rubber duck has a surprisingly interesting history. Early rubber toys began appearing during the late 1800s, although they weren't necessarily the floating bath toys we recognize today.

Over time, toy makers developed different versions of the rubber duck. Sculptor Peter Ganine later designed a floating duck toy that became extremely popular and helped shape the familiar rubber duck we know today.

As manufacturing changed, many rubber ducks eventually began being made from vinyl and plastic materials rather than natural rubber.

The little yellow duck became such an iconic childhood toy that it was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2013.

Celebrating Childhood Memories

The origins of National Rubber Ducky Day may not be as famous as the little yellow duck itself, but for many of us, rubber ducks bring back memories of childhood and bath time.

And that's one of the things I love most about children's photography. Childhood is filled with tiny details that don't always seem important at the time—a favorite stuffed animal, a well-loved blanket, a silly toy, a favorite pair of boots, or even a little yellow rubber duck.

Years later, those little details can become some of the things we miss the most.

As a Navarre children's photographer, I encourage parents to let their children's personalities be part of their photography sessions. Not every portrait has to be perfectly posed. Sometimes the silly expressions, favorite toys, big laughs, and unexpected moments are the photographs that tell the best stories.
